1. Open your color image

2. Create a Duplicate Layer and use the Channel Mixer to create a contrasty B&W image.

or Create a duplicate and turn it into black & white and Modify the Brightness and Contrast, if you don't have Photoshop.

3. Lower the B&W Layer Opacity to taste.
